August 30, 2016 Wilburn families, I want to make you aware of an incident that is affecting our school today. Around 9:20 this morning, school administration detected an odor on the campus. Per protocol, we immediately contacted 911 and evacuated the building. The first department investigated and determined the cause to be a gas leak in the neighborhood nearby. The evacuation lasted approximately 40 minutes. I am pleased to report that students evacuated in an orderly fashion and were safe the entire time. At 10:00 a.m., after our school building was deemed safe, we were able to return. While it was an inconvenience to our students and staff, we are able to complete the school day without any issues. If you have any questions or concerns, call the office at 919-850-8738. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Lutashia Dove, Principal
#TEAMWILBURN Proximos Eventos:
NO SON NUESTRAS DIFERENCIAS LAS QUE NOS DIVIDEN. ES NUESTRA INHABILIDAD DE RECONOCER, ACEPTAR Y CELEBRAR ESAS DIFERENCIAS. Audre Lorde Atentamente, Lutashia Dove, Directora Por favor, siga con nosotros:
Dear Wilburn Families, On behalf of the staff at Wilburn Elementary School, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. We are looking forward to continuing a productive partnership with you. It is our goal to ensure that every child achieves at their highest potential. We understand that it takes a strong home and school partnership to achieve this goal and make a difference in your child’s education. During these past few weeks, I have had many interactions with parents, teachers and students. From these conversations, it is clear that there is a collegial partnership between all stakeholders to provide the best possible academic experience for our students. I look forward to fostering these relationships and working with teachers and staff to provide a world-class educational experience for each child. Along with teachers and staff, I work hard to build strong relationships with parents, students and community partners. We will focus on Common Core, character education, use of data to drive instruction, direct instructional strategies to improve core instruction and increase student achievement, and providing enrichment activities for students. This year is going to be “adventurous” as we provide academic experiences for our students that are rigorous, relevant and builds relationships. As your Principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors (teachers, students, parents, volunteers and the like) are excited to be here. This attitude enables us to meet the challenges of academic excellence and meet the needs of the WHOLE child in a positive, fun, nurturing environment. My door is always open and I welcome your input. Please feel free, to call, email or stop by the office to discuss any concerns, suggestions or ideas to make this the best year ever. Respectfully, Lutashia Dove, Principal Please follow us on:
Happy December! We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and we know everyone’s looking ahead to our winter recess. We know the upcoming weeks can become quite overwhelming as families prepare for family gatherings, special travels, and perhaps some shopping outings in preparation for special traditions. As much as we’d all like to feel that we are organized and well-prepared for the upcoming weeks, each family deals with the stress of the holidays in different ways. Oftentimes, children fall victim to later bedtimes, hectic trips to the store for that last item, and sometimes experience first-hand the financial stress that plagues many families during this time of the year. Routines often fall to the wayside along with daily reading practices, consistent homework support, and even family meals. Please make a concerted effort to see that the rush and stresses of the holiday season do not seep into your child’s daily routine and need for consistency. During the month of November and December, we collected non-perishable food items to donate to families in our school community, as well as had an Angel tree event that was sponsored by the New Hope Road Church Alliance. A big thank you to everyone who gave food items to support our families. The event was a huge success. Our school community always demonstrate generosity and kindness. We have a wonderful Wilburn family. As you know, we completed the first half of the school year for all students. Thank you for participating in parent-teacher conferences and communicating with your child’s teacher so that you know the academic expectations and performance of your child(ren). If you have any concerns about your child’s academic progress, please reach out to his or her teacher or contact the school’s administrative team. Report cards went home with track 1 students on December 4th and will go home for track 4 students on December 11th. There should not be any surprises with your child’s grades, as our parent-teacher conferences offered the opportunity to discuss academic expectations and performance. Finally, winter break runs from Monday, December 18 to Friday, January 1. And yes, that means we’re not back to school until Monday, January 4th (Track 1) and Monday, January 25th (Track 4). Please take this time to enjoy your family, read a good book, play some games and just relax. When we return in January, please be sure to send your child to school with warm clothes, hats, scarves, and gloves. We have outdoor recess, even when it’s cold outside. We value exercise and physical movement. Fondly, Lutashia Dove Principal Upcoming Events!

Hello Wonderful Wilburn Families, It is hard to believe that the first quarter of the school year is already behind us. It has been wonderful seeing our student’s transition to a new school year! Thank you for attending first quarter events and being active part of our school community. As we look ahead to the months of October/November, there are many exciting activities happening at Wilburn Elementary School. Some of these activities include:
Thank you for continuing to support our school community. Your support is vital to what we do every day. October 2015 is National Bullying Prevention Month. We take bullying seriously at Wilburn Elementary school and want to ensure that every child feels safe at school. Below you will find information related to bullying and bullying prevention. What is bullying? As used in this policy, harassing or bullying behavior is any repeated, systematic pattern of gestures or written, electronic, or verbal communications, or any physical act or any threatening communication on school property; at any school sponsored function; on a school bus; or as otherwise stated in Board Policy 6400- Student Code of Conduct, and that:
What does bullying look like? Physical Bullying
Cyber-bullying is any bullying done through the use of technology. Cyber bullying includes, but is not limited to:
When does the listed behaviors become bullying?
Bullying can happen anywhere. It can occur in your neighborhood, while going to school, at school, and while on-line (texting, snap chat, facebook, etc. Bully happens most frequently in the bathroom, playground and on the bus. What can students do when bullying has been confirmed? Students can try these tips… Nobody likes to be picked on. What can you do?
What can you do if you or some else is being bullied?
Bullying is never okay, cool, or acceptable. No one EVER deserves to be bullied. From the desk of Ms. Anne Sheehan....... Did you know that AIG stands for Academically or Intellectually Gifted? The AIG program exists for identified students in K-5 who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age. Services for AIG students include differentiated curriculum and instruction that extends and enriches the Common Core State Standards. These students receive instruction from our AIG teacher in the form of small-groups and/or co-teaching. This varies per grade level. Wilburn also offers students who have not qualified for AIG services, but are highly capable, extension and enrichment opportunities. Aside from the differentiated teaching their general education teachers provide they have the opportunity to take part in small group experiences with the AIG teacher. We have some students at Wilburn who are highly capable, but are not AIG. It is our job to fully develop their potential and this is one way we do that. In kindergarten and first grade all students are currently participating in a nurturing program called Nurturing for a Bright Tomorrow. We are working with Duke University and the AIG department to provide this program to all students in kindergarten and first grade this year. This program explicitly teaches thinking skills and gifted behaviors. The classroom teacher teaches these lessons daily using materials provided by the district and with the support of the AIG teacher. In grades K, 1, 2, and 4 Wilburn's highly capable students are a part of daily small group sessions with Miss Sheehan during their intervention block. They work on extending the concepts being taught in the classroom. In third grade Miss Sheehan teaches students through the Explorer's Program. The 3rd grade Explorers Model provides an opportunity for the AIG teacher to collaborate with third grade teachers and to provide a variety of in-class experiences for any student demonstrating need. Students who demonstrate high performance will participate in small-group enrichment activities in languages arts and/or mathematics with the AIG teacher. In fourth and fifth grade the students are currently being served by Miss Sheehan through a combination of co-teaching in their general education classroom and small pull-out groups. Remember, participating in a small-group with the AIG teacher does not guarantee identification in the WCPSS AIG program. All students who identified as AIG have gone through the identification process. This process typically begins in third grade. Prior to 3rd grade, students may be AIG identified if they show a clear demonstration of need for differentiated service from the AIG program that is two or more grade levels above their current grade level. This is determined through formal testing and the creation of a portfolio of work samples. If you have questions regarding our AIG program please feel free to contact Miss Sheehan at [email protected] or by sending a note into school with your student. Thank you! How to Prepare for a Successful Parent Teacher Conference A parent-teacher conference offers an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers and others who support your child’s learning, as well as an opportunity to learn more about how your child is doing in school and how you can support learning at home.
TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE Involve your child in the conference. Have a discussion with your child. Ask your child if there is anything he/she would like you to discuss with his/her teacher(s). Prepare questions, such as “What is my child doing well while he/she is in school,” “Is my child performing on grade level,” “Is my child finishing the work assigned in class,” “How can I help my child at home” and “What is the best way to contact you if I need to ask any questions during the year?” If you are not confident communicating in English, let the school or teacher(s) know in advance so that an interpreter can be available to assist you. Please make sure you arrive on time. There is a short time for each conference and we want to make sure that all families can meet with the teacher(s). Your child’s success is most important and the teachers play an important role in your child’s growth and education. It is important that you work together in order to ensure your child is successful. During the conference, the teacher will take notes and you should too, so that you can remember what was discussed and know how to support your child at home. You will get a copy of the conference sheet for your records. Remember, you and the teacher are a team. Appreciate the role you each play in educating your child. After the conference make certain that you and your child knows what is expected of him/her. If you have not had a parent conference, please send me an email at [email protected] or call the front office. We appreciate the support you provide us as we continue to inspire all students to become proficient readers and writers. Carpool Arrival and Dismissal Safety is and will continue to be our first priority! Carpool Students: Parents should not park in the parking lot and let students out of the car. All vehicles should enter the school grounds through the front entrance as students exit all vehicles while following carpool procedures. Process AM: Cars will enter through the carpool loop and wait for a staff member to open the door. Once the child is out of the car, you will receive a signal to exit the loop. Please do not pull around to the side of the building and let students out of the car. Please follow the process to ensure the safety of all our students. It only takes a few minutes to complete the process. Remember safety first for all students. Process PM: Cars will enter through the carpool loop and wait at the entrance of the carpool lane. The caller will call 15 callers from one lane and 15 cars from the other lane. Please make sure you have your carpool number visible for us to see. If you do not have your tag, you will be asked to park, go inside and show your ID before we release your child to you. This is a safety measure in place to protect your child. Remember safety first for all students. Reminders We are committed to the safety of our students so I would like to remind our parents of the following points: 1. Students should not be dropped off at school due to no supervision. Staff do not report to work until 8:40. Students may enter the building at 8:45 each morning. They will go directly to breakfast and then to the classroom to eat. Parents of Morning Carpool Students: Please follow the directives of our Carpool staff each morning. If a student arrives in a car, that car must follow the carpool procedures which includes remaining in the car as the child exits the car at the appointed time. For example, the adult may not park the car in the parking lot while the child walks in the building. Plus a car may not park off campus as an adult walks the child onto school property. A student is a walker if he/she WALKS from their residence. Safety is our number one concern so we need all car riders to follow school procedures for the safety of all students and carpool staff. 2. If there is a change of afternoon transportation, it must be in writing. Phone calls and emails will not be accepted as we cannot verify or document phone calls. 3. The end of the school day is very important as teachers end instruction and close out the day. Students may not be checked out after 3:00. Your child, our student, is our focus and concern. The above procedures are all about the safety and well-being of your child. Volunteers All volunteers who were approved for the 2014-2015 school year MUST reactivate as a volunteer no later than 4:00 p.m. on October 30, 2015. Volunteers may go to any WCPSS site and register through the intranet. Access to the volunteer system is: WCPSS Intranet – Business Applications – Volunteer Registration. Don’t delay! Reactivate Now! Any new volunteers must register and have an approved criminal record check prior to engaging in volunteer work. Sincerely, Lutashia Dove Curriculum CornerReading is Fundamental to Success We read menus, street signs, food labels and text messages effortlessly. We read for enjoyment, and to learn about our ever-changing world. We read to better ourselves and our careers. Hopefully we also read to our children! Our children will need strong literacy skills to learn new information as they grow. What can you do to help? Set up a place and time for your child to read independently each night. And show a positive attitude about reading by reading together for fun. Reading aloud to your child has major benefits. It strengthens your relationship as you tell connected stories. It increases your child’s vocabulary, language development, emotional intelligence, and background knowledge. Through conversations sparked by events or illustrations in a book you learn more about one another. Joyful reading experiences nourish the love of learning that will lead them to higher levels of success in school and in life. Let your child choose the books, or share your childhood favorites. Spend some quality time together, cuddle up and read for just 10 minutes each night before bed! Even that little investment of time can make a difference. Jasmine Barcelona, MS.Ed,NBCT K-2 Literacy Coach Wilburn Elementary School Curriculum/Instructional Resource Teacher (IRT) Corner Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! A few things I would like to remind you of as we move forward with the new school year:
These are a few great ways to increase our student’s learning through our school/home connect. I encourage you to look out for upcoming events at school that will support content areas specific to your child’s grade level. Any support needed, please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s teacher or contact me, Ms. Sides at the school. Thanks again and welcome back! Ms. Q. Sides News from our School PsychologistHello Wilburn families! I am Jennifer Garcia, the school psychologist for Wilburn Elementary School. My job is to collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students. As we begin the school year, I look forward to working with parents and teachers to help our students develop positive academic motivation and bring out their natural love for learning and discovery. What is positive academic motivation? It is when our students believe that they can be successful if they try hard, work in order to master the material, and are motivated in improve their performance rather than just to better than other children.
Together, we can help our students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally! http://schoolpsychjenny.weebly.com/ Occupational Therapist News!Occupational Therapy at Wilburn Elementary School Occupational Therapy services within the Wake County Public School System are designed to promote a student’s ability to successfully participate in their education within the entire school. We evaluate students when the IEP team feels it would be helpful to look specifically at a student’s ability to function within several different areas and then participate in the students’ IEP meetings to help develop a yearly educational plan for students receiving special education services. These evaluations and the follow-up IEP plans can include the following areas. OT’s frequently assess a child’s fine motor skills which is the student’s ability to perform small, coordinated movements with her hands – such as hold a pencil or scissors correctly and then use them appropriately within the classroom, hold and use a spoon or fork functionally at lunch, and independently manipulate buttons and zippers on the student’s clothing to allow for independent toileting and putting on or removing a jacket. We address visual-motor/visual-perceptual needs, such as handwriting, drawing, cutting with scissors, and word-processing. Occupational Therapists also help to support students who experience sensory-processing challenges, such as tolerating being touched by peers in the lunch line, sitting still in their chairs during morning meeting, story time on the carpet, or moving smoothly through the school environment. OT’s work both individually with students when needed and also work with several students together when it is more appropriate. We also sometimes work within a classroom either directly with students or when it is most beneficial to support a student by supporting the teachers who work with them every day throughout the school day. Please feel free to contact me, Lynn Lake OTR/L, if you have any questions or would like more information regarding Occupational Therapy services within your school system.
